Faculty members and students from several higher secondary schools and colleges in Goa want inclusion of gender sensitization in school curriculum, and sex education to be disseminated in an age-appropriate and contextualized manner at all levels of education.
These are among the several suggestions listed by participants during a round table meeting held at Goa college of home science in Panaji organized by the city-based NGO Saad Aangan in collaboration with the colleges. The suggestions would be sent to Justice Verma committee on the law relating to sexual assault and related concerns of gender justice. The students and faculty members felt that both gender sensitization and sex education need to be a foundation subject like environmental studies.
The participants strongly felt that it must be obligatory to have standard operating procedures and protocols in place for police and various personnel under the law while dealing with cases of violations of women's rights. Taking into consideration the nation-wide debate over harsher punishment for rape accused, the participants said that punishments for rape must be harsh enough to create a deterrent effect, but this may not be interpreted to mean an endorsement for death penalty or castration.
