Higher education has to include all sections of society

He was speaking after inaugurating a one-day national-level seminar on ‘National Movement in princely Mysore- A reappraisal’ at Basudev Somani college here on Wednesday. “The three necessities of higher education which in simple words mean expansion, inclusion and excellency has to become lifeblood of education system in India.

Higher education has to include all sections of society, which are not till now. Many colleges are now organising more and more seminars and conferences. Government is encouraging intellectual academic discourses which supports the development of colleges,” he said.

National movements played an important role in political change to drive out British empire from India. Moral movement led by Mahatma Gandhi, is a unique movement in history. Truth and non-violence were not new, but he implemented them, he added.

Retired DOS in History, Mangalore University, B Surendra Rao said, history is not just events that has taken place, but understanding of events constitute history and is not understood if it is just spoken about. History can never die, because present never dies.

Present gets absorbed in future so will past be revisiting. “We are interested in living past. Freedom movements were all over nation and certain circumstances has seen regions in opposition to nation. Unless the regions are tamed, nation cannot be tamed,” he said.

Regions are the expressions of nation. In many princely states, national movements came late, postponed for various reasons, curbed and due to problems they did not involve in national movements. In many states, people were nationalistic, not rulers. In a nationalistic construction, regions are miniature nationalism, he said.

Unification of Karnataka went  parallel with National movement. When India was finding a way to define itself, Karnataka was also finding a way to define itself. Advantage of regional history is that all regions have participated in national movement.

The happenings in nation is miniatured in regional movements. “Quit India Movement of 1942 with a strong urge to drive out Britishers exploded all over country. Large number of freedom fighters  cook up stories to encash in present days,” he said.

The regional movements though important, we disqualify many for nationalistic discourse. Some movements in regions go unrecognised in this way. When freedom is spoken about, it is not only freedom from British rule, economic, social and cultural freedom goes along. India has been independent from Britishers but not achieved freedom, he added.

Chairman and managing trustee of The Institute of Education Trust H N Nagaraj released third edition of ‘Nudi Sambrama,’ a journal by journalism students of the college. Principal of college S R Ramesh, co-ordinators S S Raje Urs and M P Basavaraj and member of organising committee M Shankar were present.
