Three-day international conference on medical education begins

ISLAMABAD: A three-day international conference on medical education commenced here Sunday to establish standard of basic and higher qualifications in the field of medicine and dentistry throughout the country.

The conference was arranged by Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) in collaboration with other partner organizations in connection with its golden jubilee celebrations, with an aim to promote health related academic and research activities.

Around 600 delegates from various countries are attending the conference including Iran, Saudi Arabia, Australia, China, Sudan, Uganda, United Kingdom and USA. Total 140 research papers will be presented in the conference by eminent medical experts.

Senior foreign and local medical practitioners presented their papers in the opening session today on topics including improve learning and assessment in the workplace, program evaluation, global standards and accreditation, commitment to quality improvement of medical education through accreditation, social responsibilities of medical colleges and medical education leadership in Pakistan.

The presentations were presented by Associate Dean, University of Illinois, Chicago, USA, President and Chief Executive Officer, FAIMER, USA John Norcini, Visiting fellow of the Australian National University, Canberra Australia, Assistant Prof. University of Damam, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and Pro Vice Chancellor, Health Sciences Prof. Dr. Umar Ali Khan.

Addressing the inaugural session, Vice President, Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG), USA, Jack. Boulet
appreciated the steps taken by PMDC for maintaining its standard. He
added ECFMG has formally accepted the standard of PMDC.

Vice President World Federation for Medical Education (WFME) Janet Grant congratulated PMDC for arranging international conference on
important subject. He acknowledged the efforts of PMDC for improving the standard of medical education in Pakistan.

President PMDC, Prof. Dr. Sibtul Hasnain apprised the participants
about the objectives, performance and accreditation activities of PMDC.
He said the council is providing uniform and standard health facilities
to the people for the last 50 years.

He said the council's accreditation standards are commendable which
are comparable to those of developed countries. He said being a regulatory body and its quest for achieving excellence in the field of medicine, PMDC is respected worldwide and is a key partner of international community of medical regulatory authorities.

He said the organization has played a vital role in safeguarding public interest and has maintained an effective system of recognition through inspection, which is comparable with any regulatory authority in the world.

He said PMDC has introduced new courses and research methodologies in the country, in order to keep the medical graduates updated with the latest technology and disease treatment methods. (APP)
