American College of Physicians (ACP), the second largest physician group in the United States, has announced the launch of its chapter and programme in collaboration with medical colleges and regulatory bodies.
“We have a vast knowledge base and our task is to make the physicians up-to-date with the latest in the field through a number of programmes like continuing medical education and collaboration with the medical colleges to equip the students,” said Dr Phyllis A Guze, chair of the Board of Regents of the ACP.
“We will organise guest lectures, training workshops and conferences with international speakers to promote exchange of knowledge and best practices. ACP’s mission is to enhance the quality and effectiveness of healthcare by fostering excellence and professional in the practice of medicine,” she said, while interacting with the reporters here today.
“Now the membership of ACP will be open to Indian doctors and they can access the vast data and resources of ACP. We have clinical guidelines and treatment protocols which will be available for the members,” said James M Ott, senior vice-president (international programmes) of ACP.
ACP, an organisation of internists physicians who specialize in the prevention, detection and treatment of illnesses in adults, the largest medical-specialty organisation and second-largest physician group in the United States. Its membership of 133,000 includes internists, internal medicine subspecialists, and medical students, residents, and fellows.
“Out of the total members, 10 per cent are outside the US. Already we have roughly 200 doctors from India. We have 80 chapters and 14 are outside the US. We opened our chapter in Saudi Arabia last year. Now we are planning to open more chapters in the South East Asian region,” he said.
ACP’s membership offers a variety of training programmes on office-based procedures, physical examinations, trends in medicine and use of assessment tool (MKSAP) to continuously test physicians themselves on skills/knowledge. ACP is positioned as knowledge leader being the largest medical society in US.
